Considering a Career as a Personal Stylist? Tips to Help You

So you are thinking of embarking on a career as a personal stylist? Congratulations! Just remember though that as glamorous and exciting as the job can be, it can also be incredibly stressful and draining at the same time. Celebrity personal stylists and stylists of other high profile individuals are constantly battling stress and pressure because for one, their choices are on the world stage and two, their names are on the line. However, if you know what you are doing and are confident in your abilities, the rest of it is a cinch. Here are a few things to bear in mind.

Network

This is not a field you can succeed in by clamming up or living under a rock. Neither is it a business you can hope to achieve much in by just browsing through websites online and watching fashion shows on YouTube. Although yes they do help, they are secondary. You need to be pro-active and network. Visit fashion houses, stores and meet their owners, managers and other personnel. Speak with them, get to know their stores and build rapport. You will need them at some point or another, and it is better to cross bridges already built than having to build them at the last minute.

Get On Social Media

In this day and age if you have to be pushed to get on social media, then you are either in the wrong era or on the wrong career path. Fashion is not something you can do without an online presence. You need to be on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter you name it. There is so much you can be exposed to and find out, whether you are after fillies collection hats, asymmetrical dresses or cowboy boots for that matter. In fact, you would be surprised to know just how much easier your life will be by being a little more connected to technology.

Have a Great Attitude

Nobody wants to work with a crabby stylist, especially seeing as how this is not something to be uptight about. It is a demanding and exhausting job sometimes, which is why it is important for you to first completely understand and accept what you are in for. You need to have a great attitude that is contagious. Everyone immediately knows and recognizes when someone is passionate about their job, stylist or no stylist. You want your clients to feel cared about, wanted and looked after, so make sure you deliver.

Be Punctual

As you build up your client base and portfolio, you will have endless meetings and appointments to run back and forth from. Make sure you are punctual. Nobody wants to be kept waiting, especially in this industry as you will find out the hard way. Plus, be warned; word travels fast and it takes just one or two late appointments for people to start looking at other options instead of you. Be on-time every time.
